Chalet in the Dolomites

2022-2023

Belluno, Italy

Located lakeside in the Italian Dolomites, this charming barn conversion had to meet the requirements imposed by the conservation area and respect the vernacular character of alpine architecture. We had to completely rethink the interior to carefully integrate a bathroom with a shower into the converted loft space. The design concept follows a simple and effective layout based on four clearly defined zones, aligned with the spacing of the existing larch timber joists. First, a timber staircase runs along the stone wall at one end; second, the double bed and wardrobe occupy the central area; third, the bathroom space; and finally, at the rear, the shower and a storage chest.

All fixtures and partitions are crafted from locally sourced larch. The partition between the bedroom and bathroom features a vertical glazed strip that frames the roof ridge beam, creating visual continuity along the entire length of the barn, extending to the bathroom window. The strategic placement of two large triangular mirrors on the end wall dramatically expands the perception of space. LED strips are fully recessed into the timber joists, as well as around the bathroom mirror and within the shower ceiling.
