Grade II Listed Manor House Green Retrofit and Extension
2024-on going
Cossington, Leicestershire
with Boito Sarno Architects
The Old Manor House in Cossington, Leicestershire, is a historic Grade II listed property, known for its traditional English manor house architecture and period character. A new intervention proposes a green retrofit and thoughtful remodelling of the internal space to enhance functionality while preserving its historical charm. The renovation focuses on optimizing circulation throughout the main house, creating a more cohesive flow between spaces. Additionally, a new annex is introduced to connect harmoniously with the existing structure. This annex extends the living space and includes a new kitchen, entrance, sauna facility, and a swimming pool.
Crafted with exposed timber beams and columns, the annex features a large clerestory window and expansive sliding glass doors that open onto the extensive garden, creating a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The annex is designed in two distinct halves. One half is a white-rendered rectangular volume that contrasts with the manor’s traditional façade. The other half follows the natural boundary line of the garden, constructed in fair-faced brickwork and topped with a green roof, resembling a garden wall that blends with the surrounding landscape. This green roof enhances the property’s sustainability by providing insulation, reducing rainwater runoff, and promoting biodiversity.
Through this green retrofit, the Old Manor House gains new functionality while preserving its historical significance, balancing respect for tradition with a sustainable approach to modern living.
