Grade II Listed Stables and Groom’s Cottage Conversion
2022- currently on site
Turweston, Buckinghamshire
with Boito Sarno Architects
As part of a sustainable retrofit of a groom’s cottage and stables, our client appointed us to design a single-storey stone extension in Turweston, a village near Brackley in Buckinghamshire. The key elements of this ongoing project include the complete reconstruction of the East façade, incorporating highly insulated walls and efficient double-glazed doors to ensure optimal thermal insulation and airtightness while maximizing natural sunlight. Additionally, insulation is being added to the interior of the stone walls, the ground slab, and the roof to enhance energy efficiency throughout.
High-performance double or triple glazing will be installed to reduce reliance on artificial lighting within the cottage. Over the extension, a new, highly insulated roof will feature a 13-square-meter biodiverse section, offering a net gain in biodiversity by replacing the existing paved brick courtyard and contributing to flood mitigation through rainwater absorption. To further reduce carbon impact, the oil boiler will be replaced with renewable energy systems, including solar panels and air-source heat pumps. A Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery system will also be implemented, significantly reducing space heating demands and eliminating the need for carbon-based energy.
