Timber Loft Conversion
2022-2023
Islington, London
with Boito Sarno Architects
This loft conversion is located on a hilly site by the Parkland Walk, a stretch of disused railway linking Highgate to Finsbury Park. All structural timber elements are exposed, lending a warm, organic touch to the space. The external brickwork of the house has been painted with a breathable coating, which prevents the bricks from absorbing rainwater while allowing them to maintain their natural texture. The interior design features slimline steel frame windows, which bring a sleek, industrial look and allow abundant natural light to flood the space. These windows frame scenic views of the surrounding parkland, enhancing the loft's connection to the outdoors.Solid pine long board flooring has been installed, bringing warmth and continuity to the space. The pine boards, chosen for their natural grain and durability, provide a timeless foundation that complements the exposed timber elements above.
A birch plywood staircase with a natural finish connects to the main floors below, adding warmth and understated elegance. The stairs are designed with winders to maximize space, creating a smooth transition between levels. The natural finish on the birch plywood highlights its subtle grain and warm tones, harmonizing with the other wooden elements in the loft. In the bathroom, a combination of terrazzo flooring and marble tiles enhances the space with a blend of textures and luxury. The terrazzo floor introduces a subtle pattern and durability, while the marble tiles add sophistication and a refined contrast. Together, these materials create a striking balance, adding to the loft's modern, elevated aesthetic.
